This play deviated from the then prevalent themes based on mythology or historical events became immensely popular due to its stylistic freshness and the contemporary content. Realistic depiction of the middle class milieu, spoken fluency of the dialogue, thematic intensity protruding out of the simple structure, all this and many other features make this play a classic in Indian theatre. It’s a story of gradual disintegration of a middle class family. It is centered around Savitri who is a mother of 3 children and a frustrated wife of Mahindranath. Savitri’s bitterness about her meek, dependent and nincompoop husband leads her insecurity in search of a complete man. The fatality of circumstances does not offer any solution to get out of the maze in which the characters are rooted. Thus the play epitomizes unfulfilled, incompleteness of human life. There have been many productions of this play most of which had one male actor performing all male characters in the play. That scheme was commensurate with the text of the play as it brings out the metaphor of a fragmented manhood. Over the years, a few changes in its presentation, art direction and even the text of the play have been staged. Natya Bharati’s production of AADHE ADHURE will surely bring out yet another fascinating theatrical possibility explored through the versatile direction by Amol Palekar.
