"RON"

a play by Sudipta Bhawmik

Set in the backdrop of the current conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan, the play, RON explores issues of loyalty and patriotism in the context of an Indian immigrant family settled in the United States, where the only son decides to join the US army and gets deployed to Iraq. The larger issues of war are juxtaposed against the war(s) that each one of us continue to fight for our physical and emotional survival. The wars we fight are not always just and fair but we still fight them anyway. The play also poignantly portrays the challenges a family faces when a loved-one is fighting a war, especially a war that they may or may not believe in. Ron (Ronobir) Mitra, the only child of Animesh and Shanti Mitra, is a member of the US Army National Guard and is currently deployed in Iraq. Although Ron’s parents are not happy with his decision to join the US Army, they respect his wishes to serve his nation. However, Ron's deployment to active duty in Iraq is a constant source of tension and anxiety, as they go on with their day-to-day activities in the shadow of the fear of losing Ron. To honor Ron’s special request, Shanti and Animesh decide to host a baby shower for his close friend Bidisha. The play begins on the morning of this special day as the Mitras prepare for the festivities. As the guests arrive, the air is filled with hope and excitement of the expected new arrival and the anticipation of a promised phone call from Ron. The evening takes an unexpected turn when one of the guests, Surojit Biswas, a writer and journalist from Calcutta challenges Animesh and other guests about their loyalty, their beliefs and their fundamental moral values. The party rapidly goes into a tailspin with each character revealing the secret wars that they have been fighting all along.
